Musical McCool Season 4, Week 27 (GIRLS, I Love You I'm Sorry, you look like you love me, and more)

Updated: Jul 11

Hey guys, welcome back to Musical McCool, my weekly series dissecting the Irish charts!

Aaaand for the second week in a row, we're going to keep this very brief! Partly because I'm very busy, partly because I already posted a blog post yesterday, and lastly because I'm busy.

The Top 10

Top 3 didn't change at all, but beyond that, this is the best our Top 10 has been in a while!

1. Please Please Please - Sabrina Carpenter [LW: #1 / WOC: 4]

2. espresso - Sabrina Carpenter [LW: #2 / WOC: 12]

3. A Bar Song (Tipsy) - Shaboozey [LW: #3 / WOC: 12]

4. Good Luck, Babe! - Chappell Roan [LW: #6 / WOC: 13]

5. Birds of a Feather - Billie Eilish [LW: #4 / WOC: 7]

6. Cruel Summer - Taylor Swift [LW: #11 / WOC: 57]

7. Fortnight - Taylor Swift (Ft. Post Malone) [LW: #10 / WOC: 11]

8. I Had Some Help - Post Malone (Ft. Morgan Wallen) [LW: #5 / WOC: 8]

9. Stargazing - Myles Smith [LW: #8 / WOC: 8]

10. Austin - Dasha [LW: #7 / WOC: 20]

Between Good Luck, Babe! vaulting into the Top 5, Taylor's concert sending 2 of her biggest recent hits back into the Top 10, and Houdini getting knocked out of the Top 10 altogether, what a great improvement!

The Punished and the New

And now, our Top Stories:

  1. Lover by Taylor Swift also returned to the Top 20 at number 14 this past week - weird choice considering her current relationship (or lack thereof) with Joe Alwyn.

  2. KISSES by BL3SS & CamrinWatsin finally reached the Irish Top 10, making it our, what, 10th Irish-made hits of this year, Hell yeah!

  3. NIGHTS LIKE THIS by The Kid LAROI is now at 27 for absolutely no sane reason.

  4. Red Wine Supernova AND Hot To Go are now BOTH in the Top 30!

  5. Houdini and Training Season by Dua Lipa both returned at 35 and 91 respectively.

  6. In similar news, SZa's recent concert got Kill Bill and Nobody Gets Me to chart again at 40 and 44.

  7. MILLION DOLLAR BABY by Tommy Richman was claimed by ACR and absolutely collapsed down to 39.

  8. Sadly, and for no good reason, girl, so confusing by Charli and Lorde fell to 52, FUCK!

  9. For the second week in a row, a song I covered on the Homegrown charts a couple of weeks ago crossed over to the mainstream one, AKA Pretty Green Eyes by KETTAMA at number 82.

  10. There's a load of inconsequential older hits like Viva La Vida, Just Give Me A Reason and Riptide continuing to take up space across the chart... I ran out of points so there you go, that's 10.

And with that, our new arrivals:

Title: GIRLS by The Kid LAROI

Position: #54

Who was asking for The Kid LAROI's take on Cyndi Lauper?! Production's promising and I think the hook isn't bad, but MAN does his insecure, bitter whining on the verses bring this crashing back down to painfully mediocre!

Title: I Love You, I'm Sorry by Gracie Abrams

Position: #67

Cute play on I Miss You, I'm sorry, Gracie's mediocre breakout hit from 2020, and I actually think it's one of the better songs on the project, but it's basically just the dumbed-down version of Billie Eilish's I Love You. Decent, but nothing special.

Title: Move by Adam Port, Stryv & Keinemusik

Position: #70

2 DJs from opposite sides of the world (Germany and LA) collab for a lowkey dance track... and I actually think it's lowkey kinda great? I like that it takes its time, I love the spacious mix, making the timid vocals feel fittingly amplified by these huge feelings. Nice job.

Title: you look like you love me by Ella Langley & Riley Green

Position: #74

This is cheating. An organic story-telling, almost spoken-word, cowboy love story, where Ella Langley confidently walks up to this guy and declares that he should take her home. It's dumb, fun, vividly-told, gorgeously-produced, and lead by a woman with SO much raw charisma. Too up my alley to ignore, great little song!

Title: Cowboys Cry Too by Kelsea Ballerini & Noah Kahan

Position: #77

FUCK, that's 2 for 2 gorgeous country songs with gorgeous duet aspects! Don't like this one QUITE as much - the 2 verses aren't direct responses to each other, and frankly, Noah Kahan does NOT project "cowboy" at all - but it's pretty, well-written, and dare I say a smarter and deeper song... pretty great, but still not quite as good. Glad to see Kelsea seeing some country success after her devastating EP last year though!

Title: ROCKSTAR by LISA

Position: #94

Man, what a strong series of tracks! Blackpink's LISA brings a ton of swagger to this glicthy, early 2010s pop throwback, where she flexes on her rockstar lifestyle, with sone genuinely quotable lines... even if one of those lines is "Lisa, can you teach me Japanese? That's my life." feels like it carries a certain amount of bitterness coming from a South Korean artist. Not a dig at her to be clear, just sounds rough. Good song!

Still, even with a really solid collection of candidates, the Best has to go to you look like you love me by Ella Langley & Riley Green, for just bringing a big, goofy smile to my face every time it plays, and being WAY better produced than most anything currently charting! What a great step up from supporting fucking HARDY! As for the Worst of the week, I simply don't have time for a career revival from The Kid LAROI, so Girls is taking that top spot. Shame too, the production's pretty good.

National Treasures

And now it's time for our new entries to the Homegrown Top 20. And continuing on our positive streak:

Title: Satellites by Picture This

Position: #9

So Picture This' new album Act of Innocence is actually kind of great, it BARELY missed my midyear list and still keeps bringing me back for more listens! Now, Satellites is NOT one of the best songs by any means (it's pretty mid-tier on the project), but it still builds to a great hook, the production is pretty, and while it's a tad underwritten and compressed in the instrumental, it's simply too earnest not to enjoy... kind of like the entire album, really.

And that's our week! As always, let me know in the Comments what you thought of the songs covered this week, and leave a Like if you enjoyed! Please make sure to follow me everywhere so you don't miss a thing, and Subscribe to the blog to keep up with my weekly chart reflections. I hope life treats you kindly, and until the next time, I'm Fionn and this is The Social Tune signing off!

Looks like WOTW hasn't been updated, my guess is that it probably was GIRLS?
